About Lunar Calendar
The Lunar Date Converter allows you to convert any date between the Gregorian solar calendar and the traditional East Asian lunar calendar. It operates in two modes: Solar to Lunar (양력→음력) and Lunar to Solar (음력→양력). Simply select year, month, and day from the dropdown menus and the converted date appears instantly. The tool covers the years 2000 through 2030, which handles the vast majority of practical use cases including upcoming birthdays, memorial days, and traditional Korean holidays.
The Korean lunar calendar, derived from the Chinese lunisolar calendar, assigns months based on the phases of the moon. A standard lunar year has 12 months, but approximately every 2–3 years an intercalary "leap month" (윤달, pronounced yundal) is inserted to keep the lunar calendar aligned with the solar year. The converter fully supports leap months — when converting from lunar to solar, users can check the "Leap Month" checkbox to specify that a date falls in a leap month rather than the regular occurrence of that month.
The tool uses a precomputed lookup table of lunar new year dates (설날, the first day of Lunar Month 1) and monthly day counts (each lunar month is either 29 or 30 days) for every year from 2000 to 2030. Conversion is performed by calculating the day offset from the lunar new year and mapping it through the month-day table. Leap month data is encoded for all years that have intercalary months in the supported range.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the solar and lunar calendar?
The solar (Gregorian) calendar is based on Earth's revolution around the sun and has 365 days per year (366 in leap years). The lunar calendar is based on the phases of the moon, with each month starting at a new moon. A lunar month is about 29.5 days, making a lunar year roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year. Intercalary (leap) months are added periodically to resynchronize the two systems.
What is a leap month (윤달) in the lunar calendar?
A leap month (윤달) is an extra month inserted into the lunar calendar approximately every 2–3 years to compensate for the 11-day annual difference between the lunar and solar cycles. For example, if 2025 has a leap month after Month 6, there will be two "Month 6" entries — the regular Month 6 and then Leap Month 6 (윤6월) — before Month 7 begins. This tool correctly handles these intercalary months in both conversion directions.
Why do Korean birthdays and memorial dates often use the lunar calendar?
Many Koreans born before widespread adoption of the solar calendar recorded birthdays in lunar dates. Traditional death anniversaries (제사, jesa) are also observed on the lunar date of death. Korean national holidays like Chuseok (추석, 15th day of Lunar Month 8) and Seollal (설날, Lunar New Year) are fixed to lunar dates but vary each year in the solar calendar.
How do I find the solar date for Chuseok this year?
Chuseok is always on the 15th day of Lunar Month 8. To find the solar date, select "Lunar to Solar" mode, enter the current year, set month to 8, and day to 15, then read the solar result. For example, Chuseok 2024 falls on September 17 in the solar calendar.
What years does the converter support?
The converter supports solar years 2000 through 2030, which corresponds to Korean lunar years from approximately 1999 to 2030 depending on when the lunar new year falls each year. Dates outside this range cannot be converted and will display an error message.
How accurate are the lunar calendar calculations?
The tool uses precomputed lunar new year dates and monthly day counts derived from the official Korean standard lunar calendar (한국 표준 음력). The data has been verified against published Korean astronomical calendars. For official legal or ceremonial use, please confirm with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (한국천문연구원) calendar.
Can I convert a date that falls in a leap month?
Yes. In "Lunar to Solar" mode, check the "Leap Month" (윤달) checkbox before converting. This tells the calculator that your date belongs to the intercalary copy of that month rather than the regular month. If the selected year/month combination does not have a leap month, the checkbox has no effect.
Why does the same lunar date fall on a different solar date each year?
Lunar months start at each new moon, which doesn't align with fixed solar calendar dates. Additionally, the insertion of leap months in some years shifts subsequent lunar months later. This is why Korean holidays like Seollal and Chuseok, which are fixed in the lunar calendar, appear on different solar dates year to year.
